EMS Fellowship

Letter from the EMS Program Director

Thank you for your interest in the Maimonides EMS Fellowship. The Emergency Medical Services Fellowship at Maimonides Medical Center is only the second EMS fellowship in all of New York City. We received our initial accreditation from the ACGME for our EMS Fellowship in 2022, however the opportunity to offer an EMS Fellowship at 'Maimo' was a long time coming. With seven EMS board-certified physicians on the faculty, there are few programs that have as much cumulative expertise among their faculty. Additionally, as the second largest voluntary contributor of 9-1-1 ambulances to the NYC EMS system, Maimonides has a very large outreach into many parts of Brooklyn, one of the most diverse communities you will find in the entire country. People often don't know that with almost three million people, Brooklyn is as large as the city of Chicago. However, Brooklyn has drastically fewer trauma centers and pediatric tertiary care centers than Chicago. Fortunately, Maimonides is a level one adult trauma center and the only pediatric trauma center in the borough of Brooklyn. The catchment area for Maimonides is quite large, with an incredibly diverse population and a wide array of pathology spanning patients from all levels of health literacy.

Since I came to Maimonides in 2013, the role and footprint of our EMS system has greatly expanded. We established the Maimonides On Line Medical Control (OLMC) facility which quickly became the second largest in the city of New York serving various 9-1-1, private, and volunteer EMS agencies. We also have a robust interfacility EMS system including a dedicated 24-hour unit that transports critically ill, high-risk patients with a variety of pathologies such as those requiring ECMO, being stabilized with intra-aortic balloon pumps or Impella cardiac devices, or pediatric patients requiring tertiary care services. More broadly, our EMS physicians are heavily involved in NYC EMS operations, with active roles in the NYC Regional Emergency Medical Advisory Committee (REMAC) as well as their various subcommittees such as the NYC Protocol Committee and the Certification and Credentialing Committee. Additionally, we offer an incredibly unique Mass Gathering Medicine experience at Maimo, literally sending our fellows all over the country to practice medicine at many different diverse events. Our fellows will become intricately involved with the nuts and bolts of building field hospitals hours away from the closest tertiary care facility and will be routinely practicing medicine at mass gatherings with high acuity pathology and limited resources, meaning no computed tomography scanner anywhere around. You will love it!

The entire faculty is very proud of the experience that our EMS physicians-in-training receive. We are thrilled with the growth of our EMS department and are ecstatic that our long time wish of starting our own EMS fellowship has come to fruition. Our chairman, Dr. John Marshall, has inspired and mandated us to improve the medical care delivered in the streets of Brooklyn. Given our passion for EMS, EMS provider education, and promoting medical advancement in the prehospital field, we have taken that mandate very seriously. Our role as EMS faculty is to ensure that our EMS fellows have a first-rate education replete with experiential learning and didactics. We can't wait to meet you and we are confident your time at Maimo will prepare you for the rest of your career.
