The mission of the Maimonides Medical Center Emergency Medicine Summer Research Program for Underrepresented Minority Students is to expose first-year medical students to the specialty of Emergency Medicine and provide them with the tools, mentorship and resources needed to develop their critical thinking and analytic skills, regardless of their future specialty choice. Students who are underrepresented in medicine face many challenges throughout their education and training and this program is designed to encourage the development of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to succeed in their careers.

By participating in this program, students will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn and practice critical thinking and analytic skills.

  • Publish a research abstract as the first-author in an area of emergency medicine.

  • Present the findings of their research at the Maimonides Medical Center Emergency Medicine Summer Research Conference/attend the MSRE Graduation.

  • Understand the scope of practice of emergency medicine, including patient population, clinical encounters, procedures, documentation, and interdisciplinary teamwork.

  • Gain an introduction to the subspecialties within emergency medicine, including administration, critical care, EMS, medical education, pediatric emergency medicine, simulation, social emergency medicine, and ultrasound.

  • Develop a longitudinal mentoring relationship with emergency medicine residents and faculty

Established in 2020, MSRE is entering its sixth year and offers medical students a structured and immersive experience designed to foster growth as physician-scientists. The program provides hands-on involvement in clinical research, exposure to patient care, close mentorship from faculty and residents, and engagement with peers and institutional leaders through lectures, workshops, and presentations. Each student completes a focused research project under faculty or resident supervision and presents their work at an end-of-summer poster session. The program supports original research with the goal of abstract submission and manuscript publication in peer-reviewed journals. Many prior participants have presented at local, regional, and national conferences, with opportunities for continued research collaboration and clinical mentorship available on a case-by-case basis.

The program is scheduled to run from Wednesday, June 17 through Friday, July 31, 2026.  In addition to research mentorship, each specialty will offer clinical shadowing and specialty-specific teaching.
