The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) fellowship is a one-year ACGME accredited fellowship primarily based at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Maimonides has 14 hospital based ambulances linked to the NYC 911 EMS system, 3 critical care interfacility ambulances, 2 physician response vehicles, and 7 board certified EMS physicians on staff. The Maimonides EMS system responds to approximately 60,000 911 calls annually serving a diverse patient population across New York City. Maimonides also provides Online Medical Control (OLMC) for seven different commercial EMS agencies, and has become the second largest OLMC facility in the city of New York. Maimonides Medical Center also works closely with the largest EMS volunteer organization in the country.

As a fellow, there are ample opportunities to provide prehospital critical care, perform EMS research, obtain unique event and mass gathering medicine experience (including multi-day festivals and events at Madison Square Garden and Yankee Stadium), and become involved in NYC-centric EMS operations. The Maimonides EMS fellowship will superbly prepare fellows with the experience and education necessary to not only pass their EMS board certification, but to also excel in any prehospital system.

Curriculum

Goals and Objectives

By working directly alongside the MMC EMS medical directors, fellows focus on the following aspects of EMS medical directorship and prehospital medicine:

Latest in Training at Maimonides

Educational

• Weekly lectures on relevant EMS topics on a dedicated EMS academic day

• Practice and implementation of EMS system design and disaster management preparation

• Discuss controversial topics and new technologies in the prehospital field

• Provide paramedic education at their monthly CME sessions

• Assist with education of junior residents in EMS rotation with opportunities to speak at residency-wide conferences

• Assist with education of medical students in MS4 EMS clerkship

• Attendance at NAEMSP, Medical Director’s Course, and other national EMS conferences such as EMS World Expo

• Develop hospital-wide disaster protocols and participate in implementation of these protocols during Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) activations

Administrative

• Attend biweekly/monthly regional EMS oversight and protocol development meetings such as the monthly Regional Emergency Medical Advisory Committee (REMAC) and other protocol subcommittee meetings

• Conduct medical case reviews (MCRs) with individual paramedics and perform remediation when necessary

• Participate in Online Medical Control QA/QI call review and feedback. Our OLMC fields calls from Maimo EMS, seven private agencies, and several Volunteer Ambulance Services and Volunteer Fire Departments

Research

• Participate in monthly EMS journal club to discuss current topics in prehospital medicine along with hosting a yearly All NYC EMS journal club

• Develop and submit at least two research and scholarly projects with EMS and Research Divisions

Clinical

• Participate in BLS, ALS, Inter-facility/Critical Care Unit ride-alongs

• Perform scene response with medical directors and independently

• Participate in event/mass gathering medical direction by delivering direct patient care and provide medical direction to senior residents and other medical staff

  • Events include the U.S. Open, concerts and sporting events at Madison Square Garden, Yankee Stadium baseball games, and multi-day festivals in several states (Burning Man in Nevada, Moonrise Music Festival in Maryland, and multiple music festivals held at The Gorge Amphitheatre in western Washington)

• Work as the primary OLMC physician in the emergency room to provide OLMC for prehospital units within the NYC 911 EMS (averaging 4 calls an hour)

Salary and Benefits

Pay will be commensurate with PGY-4 or PGY-5 level. Per ACGME EMS Fellowship guidelines, clinical weekly hours will be set at 12 hours per week. Each fellow will have 4 weeks of vacation along with 1 week of CME and access to funds for CME. There will be moonlighting opportunities - performing OLMC, working in the ED, and working event medicine.
