Dr. Myungwook Bae has become the fourth physician in New York City to ever be recognized with the highly prestigious Diploma in Mountain Medicine and the first physician to attain the recognition since 2017.

The medical commissions of the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) and the International Commission for Alpine Rescue (ICAR), together with the International Society for Mountain Medicine (ISMM) established minimal requirements for a formal Diploma course in August 1997 at Interlaken, Switzerland. Many course organisers adopted these standards and the resulting Diploma in Mountain Medicine (DiMM) has become a widely respected qualification. The regulations have been updated to reflect developments in mountain medicine and to ensure that the high standard of the DiMM is maintained.

From Dr. Bae,

“Growing up by the ocean my whole life, I was always surrounded by the surfing community. Hiking and mountaineering became a way to bond between my dad and I since the early age and I was always captivated by the unpredictability of the nature. The fuel for my passion in Wilderness Medicine arose during my gap years before medical school when I served some time in Nepal/Everest Base Camp. The ability to provide medical care in the setting that brings me the most joy is by far the highest privilege I get to live with. I am interested in all aspects of Wilderness Medicine. Climbing, mountaineering, ocean, tropical, swift water, rescue, technical aspect…I completed my Wilderness Medicine Fellowship at Baystate Medical Center in 2021, where I also completed my 3 year Emergency Medicine residency to continue to grow as a physician and an adventurer.”
