High Volume, Diverse Populations

As the largest hospital in Brooklyn, we see over 120,000 patients annually, including over 30,000 pediatric patients. This makes us one of the busiest hospitals in both New York City and New York State. Maimonides is in the heart of Brooklyn, surrounded by neighborhoods with diverse populations, and with it, a wide range of pathologies, social systems, and cultural beliefs that impact our practice.

Level 1 Adult Trauma, Level II Pediatrics Trauma

Maimonides is a level 1 adult trauma center and the only Pediatric Trauma Center in Brooklyn. In the PGY-2 year, four weeks are spent at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland, one of the nation’s largest trauma centers, where the idea of the “Golden Hour” was born. Shock Trauma serves as a major trauma referral center and delivers care to over 5,000 trauma patients per year.

Exceptional Leadership

The Maimonides EM faculty includes over 70 full-time attending physicians, including numerous fellowship trained faculty in ultrasonography, pediatrics, medical informatics, addiction, critical care, simulation, toxicology and prehospital medicine. We have world renowned educators and researchers including Reuben Strayer of emupdates.com, Sergey Motov of PainFreeED, and more. Members of our emergency department faculty also currently serve in hospital-wide administrative roles at Maimonides.

Emergency Department-Based EMS System

Our fourteen hospital based ambulances respond to nearly 60,000 911 calls, which provides residents plenty of ride along opportunities to experience the full breadth of prehospital medicine. Our EMS program also provides medical control for emergency response ambulances, including the largest private and volunteer ambulance services in the 5 boroughs, and has become the second largest online medical control facility in the city of New York. Residents also undergo orientation at the FDNY 911 dispatch center, in addition to emergency preparedness training for mass casualties and weapons of mass destruction.

Residents are encouraged to participate in an array of event medicine opportunities, including being a physician at the U.S. Open, concerts and sporting events held at Madison Square Garden, baseball games at Yankee Stadium, and various multi-day music festivals in several states (Burning Man in Nevada, Moonrise Music Festival in Maryland, and multiple music festivals held at The Gorge Amphitheatre in eastern Washington)

Academic Research

Our robust research division employs a research director, manager, associates, fellows and close to 50 volunteers, who are all actively supporting faculty, residents, and fellows in conducting cutting edge research in the areas of pain management, ultrasonography, pediatrics, prehospital care, patient safety, resident wellness, emergency department operations, and more. The division has received numerous state and hospital-funded grants to support these innovative projects and publications. In the academic year of 2017-2018, our department conducted 60 research projects, presented 40 abstracts, published 41 journal articles and 2 book chapters, and participated in 50 national/international conferences. As of 2022, we have received $1.8 million dollars of grant funding.

Fellowships

We have many fellowship positions available at Maimonides including:

• EM Ultrasound Fellowship began in 2007; includes two fellowship positions per year as well as a Pediatric EM Ultrasound Fellowship which graduated its first fellow in 2011 and has one position per year.

• EM Simulation Fellowship is a one-year mentored experience working with experts in the field of simulation‐based education, administration and research while working part-time as an ED attending. It has two available positions per year.

• Medical Education Fellowship began in 2011. This is a two year fellowship which includes a Master of Education and specialized training in the education of residents, medical students and attending physicians as well as participation in regional and national educational activities and conferences. There are one to two positions available per year.

• Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Fellowship is a one year ACGME-accredited fellowship intended to train individuals in managing prehospital care. This is only the second EMS fellowship in all of New York City and accepts one fellow per year.

• Administrative Fellowship was started in 2022. This is a two year fellowship that prepares fellows to lead an ED and also offers a funded opportunity to pursue an advanced degree (e.g. MBA), through partner institutions. There is one position available every two years.

• Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship which is a 3-year training program begun in 2008; it has 2 spots available per year with six fellows currently in the department.

• Research Fellowship is a 1-year program that allows fellows focused time to pursue research and conduct trials in the emergency and acute care space.
